Le premier long métrage réalisé par Rebecca Thomas, Electrick Children est un conte touchant, captivant, magnifiquement raconté, avec un casting de charme. Eletrick Children est un hommage aux rebelles de toutes sortes, une collision entre religion et musique, irrésistiblement pétillant comme un sachet de Pop Rocks.
L’histoire commence par la découverte d’une cassette bleue qui changera à jamais la vie d’une jeune fille vivant dans une communauté mormon dans l’Utah. Fascinée par ce qu’elle écoute, une musique écrite par Jack Lee Hanging on the phone, créée par le trio américain The Nerves, rendu célèbre par Blondie à la fin des années 70.
Rachel interprétée par l’actrice Julia Garner part à la recherche de l’homme chantant sur la cassette, persuadée qu’il est lié à sa mystérieuse grossesse, affirmant avoir une subie une immaculée conception à l’écoute de la musique.L’utilisation du son est certainement la partie la plus fascinante du film, cet étrange mélange audio où se mêle le crépitement de la voix enregistrée de Rachel sur la cassette lors de son anniversaire et la fameuse chanson Hanging on the phone.
